Samuel Crompton's Spinning Mule: How One Bolton Man Changed Global Textiles

In a small workshop at Hall i' th' Wood in Bolton, Samuel Crompton invented a machine that would transform textile manufacturing across the world. The spinning mule, created around 1779, combined the best elements of existing technology to produce yarn of unprecedented quality and fineness.

The Bolton Origins of a Textile Pioneer

Samuel Crompton was born on 3 December 1753 at 10 Firwood Fold, a Grade I listed house in Bolton that remains the town's first conservation area. His father, George Crompton, worked as caretaker at Hall i' th' Wood, and after his father's death the family moved to this early 16th-century manor house. Crompton received his education at a school in Church Street under master William Barlow.

On 16 February 1780, Crompton married Mary Pimlott at Bolton Parish Church, now St Peter's. The couple had eight children, including George, born 8 January 1781. Throughout his life, Crompton supplemented his income by playing violin at Bolton theatre, using the earnings to fund his experiments.

The Invention at Hall i' th' Wood

Crompton developed the spinning mule between 1775 and 1779 in the workshop at Hall i' th' Wood. The machine was a hybrid, combining Richard Arkwright's water frame with James Hargreaves' spinning jenny; hence its original names, the "muslin wheel" or "Hall i' th' Wood wheel." The term "mule" stuck because, like the animal, it was a crossbreed.

The first mule had 48 spindles and could produce one pound of 60s thread per day, with spindles rotating at 1,700 revolutions per minute. The machine's genius lay in its ability to draw out and spin fibres simultaneously, creating strong, thin yarn suitable for both warp and weft. This technical breakthrough eliminated a major bottleneck in cotton production.

Financial Struggles and Limited Recognition

Despite creating a machine that revolutionised global textile manufacturing, Crompton could not afford to patent his invention. He attempted to keep the design secret, but the machine was widely copied across Lancashire and beyond. Fine thread produced on his mules sold for 42 shillings per pound, whilst coarser thread fetched only 14 shillings.

By 1812, a survey revealed that 4 to 5 million mule spindles were already in operation. That same year, Crompton received a parliamentary grant of £5,000 after touring Lancashire and Scotland to document the extent of mule usage. In 1824, friends and members of Bolton's Black Horse Club provided him with an annuity of £63, arranged without his knowledge to ease his poverty.

From Bolton to the World

The spinning mule's impact was profound. By the peak of production, over 5 million mule spindles operated in Lancashire alone. The machine enabled the transition from cottage industry to factory system, transforming the region into the global centre of cotton manufacturing. Bolton itself became known for "Bolton counts," the fine cotton thread that became its speciality.

Richard Roberts patented the self-acting mule in 1825, which automated the process further. By 1890, typical cotton mills operated over 60 mules, with each machine containing more than 1,320 spindles and carriages extending 150 feet in length. The machines ran four times per minute, operating 56 hours each week.

Crompton's Bolton Legacy

Samuel Crompton died on 26 June 1827 at 17 King Street, Bolton, aged 73. He was buried at St Peter's Church, where textile workers erected a granite monument in 1861. The inscription reads "Mors Ultimo Linea Rerum Est" (Death is the last boundary of human affairs).

A statue of Crompton stands in Nelson Square, unveiled on 24 September 1862 through public subscription. His birthplace at Firwood Fold remains preserved with a stone panel marking his arrival. Hall i' th' Wood, purchased by William Lever (later Lord Leverhulme) in 1899, was restored and gifted to the Corporation of Bolton in 1900, opening as a museum in 1902.

Today, Bolton Museum at Le Mans Crescent houses the only surviving example of a spinning mule built by Samuel Crompton himself. The Crompton Trail connects sites associated with his life, offering residents and visitors a tangible link to the man whose invention helped clothe the world.

Visiting Crompton's Bolton

Hall i' th' Wood Museum remains open to the public, displaying the room where the mule was developed. The building, located at coordinates 53°36′00″N 2°25′08″W, offers a rare glimpse into the domestic and working environment of an 18th-century inventor. Visitors can also walk the Crompton Trail to explore Firwood Fold, St Peter's Church, and Nelson Square, tracing the footsteps of the man who transformed global textile production from a Bolton workshop.
